The 2011 St Francis Single-Vineyard Museum-Release Riesling was produced with fruit from the Weikert Vineyard, one of Sevenhill’s five Riesling vineyards. This small vineyard (0.82ha) was planted in 1978 and has been recognised for consistently producing outstanding fruit to meet premium requirements.
Good winter and spring rains laid the foundation for optimism about the quality of the 2011 vintage. The cool summer across most of southern Australia allowed the fruit to develop evenly with good flavour and acid levels. Fortunately, at Sevenhill, we were able to pick our Riesling ahead of a major rain event on March 19 that caused major problems in many wine regions.
The winemaking focus is preservation of the vineyard's pristine fruit characters. The grapes were picked in the coolest part of the day and gently pressed, with fermentation at a very low temperature. Prompt settling and bottling ensure the vineyard's signature flavours. The Weikert block has high natural acidity and minerality, giving this wine the backbone to age beautifully and increase in complexity.
The St Francis Xavier Single-Vineyard Museum-Release Riesling has been cellared since it was bottled in 2011, allowing it to develop the distinctive style of mature Riesling. This wine retains the variety’s notable floral and citrus qualities, but also has a delicate touch of toast and honey that develops with bottle age.
