The Brother John May Reserve Release Shiraz honours the stellar career of Sevenhill’s Jesuit Winemaker Emeritus, Brother John May, SJ AM. Br May, who served as winemaker from 1972 to early 2003, planted the Shiraz vines in his early days at Sevenhill. It is a single block of outstanding, low-yielding vines that produce high-quality fruit.
Hot conditions in January triggered an early start to the 2014 vintage in the first weeks of February. Fortunately heavy rain in mid-February caused little damage and the mild conditions that followed produced ideal ripening conditions, particularly the cool nights.
The Reserve Release Shiraz was harvested in the cool of the morning on March 14, 2014. It was then crushed and destemmed into one of Sevenhill’s historic, five-tonne open slate fermenters, where it was gently plunged and pumped-over twice a day for 14 days. The wine was matured in 100% new French oak Hogsheads for two years, with further bottle ageing before release.
Made from prized, estate-grown fruit, the Brother John May Reserve Release captures all the power and grace of Clare Valley Shiraz. Deeply intense red berry fruit combines with a rich and layered palate of cassis and a hint of eucalyptus. Cedary French oak flavours and lingering fine-grained tannins at the finish. Cellar for 10 to 15 years.
