Here is a generous Shiraz made with fruit from vineyards more than forty years old, namely the Brother Lenz dry-grown block and Brother Dan block. These older vines, combined with more recently planted blocks, provide fruit of great depth and diversity.
Yields were above expectations and quality was high in the compressed 2016 vintage, particularly for the core varieties of Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Although a very dry spring in 2015 and hot weather in late November caused concern, good rains in late January 2016 and early February gave the grapes a welcome boost. Picking started at Sevenhill on February 10 and the steady flow of high-quality fruit produced outstanding varietal character and flavours.
Sevenhill's irreplaceable, 100-year slate fermenters provide the perfect dimensions for small-batch, hand-plunged fermentation of red wines, including Shiraz. The wine was basket-pressed and matured in new French barrels (25%) and older French and American oak (up to four years).
Intense, rich fruit and smooth, juicy tannins define the 2016 Inigo Shiraz, which was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2018 New Zealand International Wine Show. The mild weather that marked the long ripening of the 2016 vintage contributes to the freshness of this wine, which finishes with a hint of spice.
