Grown on a single vineyard, adjacent to the Riesling Trail, our Gewürztraminer benefits from its location in the cool base of a small valley where it develops its typical rose-petal and spicy character. The variety has high natural sugar and the late harvest style is achieved by leaving the fruit on the vine deep into the ripening season.
While ample rain in winter and spring of 2016 laid a foundation for optimism, cooler temperatures in January and rain toward the end of the month slowed ripening in the wine regions of South Australia. It was only a burst of hot weather in early February that got things moving again. The 2017 harvest began at Sevenhill on March 1, with picking of Chardonnay at Lloyd’s Farm. Warm days and cool nights made for ideal vintage conditions during March and April, leading to outstanding fruit picked at optimum ripeness.
The grapes were left on skins to cold soak for 24 hours to extract the delicious rose-petal flavours and to give the juice a pink tinge. To retain a higher natural sugar content, the fermentation was stopped at about 2 Baumé by chilling the wine.
Varietal character is underlined by typical rose petals and musk aromas of the 2017 Inigo Late Harvest Gewürztraminer. A pleasant medium-sweet flavour finishes with a touch of spice.
