Here is a generous Shiraz made with fruit from vineyards more than forty years old, namely the Brother Lenz dry-grown block and Brother Dan block. These older vines, combined with more recently planted blocks, provide fruit of great depth and diversity.
The March start to the Clare Valley’s 2017 vintage was reminiscent of bygone seasons, with some old hands recalling “how it used to be” before a changing climate pushed the first pick of harvest into early February. While ample rain in the winter and spring of 2016 laid a foundation for optimism, cooler temperatures in January and rain towards the end of the month slowed ripening in South Australia’s wine regions. A burst of hot weather in early February triggered some movement and crops began to ripen at a more normal pace in the kinder conditions.
Sevenhill's irreplaceable, 100-year slate fermenters provide the perfect dimensions for small-batch, hand-plunged fermentation of red wines, including Shiraz. The wine was basket-pressed and matured in new French barrels (25%) and older French and American oak (up to four years).
The 2017 Inigo Shiraz is marked by appealing, rich fruit cake and liquorice flavours followed by spicy oak. This elegant wine is full bodied with soft mouth-filling tannins and dark fruit flavours which linger on the palate.
