The 2017 St Francis Xavier Single-Vineyard Riesling was produced with fruit from the Weikert Vineyard, one of Sevenhill’s five Riesling vineyards. This small vineyard (0.82ha) was planted in 1978 and consistently produces outstanding fruit to meet premium requirements.
While ample rain in winter and spring of 2016 laid a foundation for optimism, cooler temperatures in January and rain toward the end of the month slowed ripening in the wine regions of South Australia. It was only a burst of hot weather in early February that got things moving again. The 2017 harvest began at Sevenhill on March 1, with picking of Chardonnay at Lloyd’s Farm. Warm days and cool nights made for ideal vintage conditions during March and April, leading to outstanding fruit picked at optimum ripeness.
The grapes are picked in the coolest period of the day and gently pressed and fermented at a very low temperature. Careful fruit selection ensures that the wine’s character is one of great elegance and varietal authenticity. Only the free run juice is used to make this wine, resulting in minimal phenolics and purity of fruit.
The elegance of the 2017 St Francis Xavier is defined by a delicate grapefruit flavour, complemented by the minerality of a slatey finish.
