Grown on a single vineyard, adjacent to the Riesling Trail, our Gewürztraminer benefits from its location in the cool base of a small valley where it develops its typical rose-petal character. The variety has high natural sugar and the late harvest style is achieved by leaving the fruit on the vine deep into the ripening season.
The combination of a dry 2018 winter and a cold spring led to the vines setting a lower than average crop. Prolonged dry conditions and events of extreme heat during January and February reduced yields further. Picking commenced on the 26th of February and progressed at a frantic pace. With daytime maximum temperatures reaching above 35C for eight consecutive days, most varieties reach the desired sugar levels quite quickly. The last fruit came through the winery doors on the 19th of March.
The Late Harvest Gewürztraminer is crushed and pressed to tank in a similar fashion to other white varieties, with the exception that we do not separate pressings from the batch and encourage some time for mild skin contact. After settling, the juice is inoculated with a neutral yeast strain and fermented at cool temperatures. Towards the end of this process, the wine is chilled rapidly to arrest the fermentation, leaving between 30 and 40 grams per litre of remaining sugar.
This flavoursome wine features aromas lifted with pear, musk and rose water. The palate has a soft acidity and a juicy sweetness. A great accompaniment to spicy foods.
