2023 27 Miles Riesling

Here is redundant proof of why Clare is one of Australia’s great riesling regions. This is the result of hand selection from the best parcels of fruit. Intense lemony lime for floral overtones on the nose. There is tension here on the palate which has a distinctive slaty wet pebble character extending through to the finish. Has a slightly chalky finish to keep it tidy. There is a distinct sense of place here from this famous Clare Valley winery and vineyard.

The '27 Miles' refers to the distance the Jesuits walked from Sevenhill to Burra to sell produce there. A fair way! This is an intense and tightly coiled expression, pleasingly chalky in texture and a treatise to restraint and purity of fruit. Pink grapefruit, just ripe green apples, faint ginger, barely-there lychee and quite a good deal of strong talc and flinty mineral characters in the mix. It sits in the palate with grip and pucker, refreshing with each sip. It's understatement is hugely appealing, and the sense of delicacy, despite quiet power, seals the deal.

Pale straw and bright in the glass. Lovely lifted aromas of lemon pith, citrus blossom, jasmine, wet slate and lime leaf. Driven and tightly coiled in flavour. All punchy, pithy citrus supported by racy, rapier-like acidity. Slaty, focused and built for the long haul.

Here's a lively expression of Clare Riesling. Ripe lime and lemon, lavender and bath salts. Plenty of flavour, fairly bursts with it, but it's also fine in acidity, with a gentle chalky texture and vry good length, with little tonic water bite. Quite fleshy. I reckon this drinks really well now, though it won't fall over anytime soon either.
